Tourism Secretary Frasco leads NorthMin Dive Festival in Misamis Oriental

Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco visited Northern Mindanao on Friday, September 8, to grace the celebration of the 3rd NorthMin Dive Festival and MisOr Dive Festival Underwater Shootout in Medina, Misamis Oriental.

The Festival, which ran from September 6 to 10, was launched in 2021 as an initiative of the Department of Tourism (DOT) to promote the country’s rich and diverse marine resources and to attract more local and foreign divers.

The event was a collaboration between DOT Region 10 and the provincial governments of Misamis Oriental and Camiguin, which are both known for their stunning dive sites and underwater attractions.

According to Secretary Frasco, the Festival aimed to showcase diving as a fun and rewarding tourism activity that can also raise awareness and appreciation for the environment and the arts.

“The Philippines is blessed with a megabiodiversity that is unmatched by any other country in the world. We want to share this with our fellow Filipinos and our foreign guests who love diving and underwater photography. Through this Festival, we hope to inspire more people to explore and protect our marine treasures,” she said.

The Festival featured various activities such as dive tours, seminars, workshops, exhibits, and competitions for scuba divers and underwater photographers. The participants were able to capture and share their amazing underwater experiences through their lenses and compete for prizes and recognition.

Some of the highlights of the Festival were the dives at the Agutayan White Island Marine Sanctuary, which is home to a variety of corals and fishes; the Banaug Shoal, which is famous for its giant clams; and the Mantangale Alibuag Dive Resort, which offers a view of the sunken cemetery of Camiguin.

Secretary Frasco was welcomed at the Laguindingan Airport by Laguindingan Mayor Diosdado Obsioma, Misamis Oriental First Lady Erlinda Unabia, Provincial Tourism Officer Atty. Jeffrey Saclot, and DOT Region 10 Director May S. Unchuan.

She was accompanied by her husband Deputy Speaker Duke Frasco, DOT Undersecretary Ferdinand Jumapao, Assistant Secretary Christopher Morales, and Director Ronald Conopio.
