Cordova’s Mariel Robert Crowned as Pasigarbo sa Sugbo 2023 Festival Queen

Cordova, Cebu – After a controversial announcement that led to a recount of scores, Mariel Robert of the Municipality of Cordova was declared the new Pasigarbo sa Sugbo 2023 Festival Queen on Wednesday evening, September 6, 2023.

The coronation night, held at the Cebu City Sports Center, was attended by thousands of spectators who witnessed the colorful display of costumes and performances from 44 contingents representing the different towns and cities of Cebu Province.

Robert, who represented the Dinagat Festival of Cordova, impressed the judges with her elegance and grace as she showcased her elaborate outfit inspired by the marine life of the island town. She also answered the question about the importance of preserving the culture and heritage of Cebu with confidence and eloquence.

She received a cash prize of P300,000, a trophy, and a crown as the new Festival Queen. She also won several special awards, such as Best in Costume, Best in Festival Icon, and Miss Photogenic.

The first runner-up was Janelle Mae Frayna of the Municipality of Tuburan, who represented the Adlaw sa Tuburan Festival. She received a cash prize of P200,000 and a trophy.

The second runner-up was Jhesidy Thea Alberca of Carcar City, who represented the Kabkaban Festival. She received a cash prize of P100,000 and a trophy. Alberca was originally announced as the grand winner during the coronation night, but a technical error in the tabulation system resulted in a wrong computation of scores.

The organizers of the event apologized for the mistake and conducted a recount of scores with the presence of representatives from each contingent. The recount confirmed that Robert was the rightful winner of the title.

The other two finalists were Arriane Chrystel Torres of Mandaue City, who represented the Panagtagbo Festival, and Mary Rose Obenza of the Municipality of San Fernando, who represented the Panagsogod Festival. They each received a cash prize of P50,000 and a trophy.

The Pasigarbo sa Sugbo Festival is an annual event that showcases the rich and diverse culture and history of Cebu Province. It is organized by the Cebu Provincial Government in partnership with the Department of Tourism.
