Jay Sonza Arrested, Imprisoned in Quezon City Jail

Former newscaster Jay Sonza, imprisoned in QC Jail for estafa and illegal recruitment

MANILA, Philippines – The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) confirmed that former newscaster and talk show host Jay Sonza or Jose Yumang Sonza is now detained at the Quezon City Jail quarantine facility in Payatas for estafa and syndicated and large scale illegal recruitment.

According to BJMP spokesperson Jayrex Bustinera, Sonza was arrested by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) on August 1 while he was about to fly to Hong Kong. He allegedly had an active warrant of arrest issued by the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 85 on July 28, 2023.

Sonza was charged with estafa and syndicated and large scale illegal recruitment for offering jobs abroad under his company JMS Global Network Corporation. According to the victims, they paid a large amount to Sonza to work in Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and other countries. But their application did not push through and they could not contact Sonza anymore.

The court granted the non-bailable warrant of arrest against Sonza because of the gravity of his cases. According to the Revised Penal Code, estafa has a penalty of imprisonment of six years to 12 years, while syndicated and large scale illegal recruitment has a penalty of reclusion perpetua or life imprisonment.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, NBI Assistant Director Glenn Ricarte said they turned over Sonza to BJMP after his medical examination. He added that Sonza has not yet posted bail because he has no lawyer.

Sonza is known as a former anchor of TV Patrol and Mel & Jay. He was also the host of programs such as Tapatan ni Tunying and Jaywalk. Before he was arrested, he was active on social media where he often criticized the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte and his critics. Some of his posted news were reported as fake or false information.
