Former Interior Undersecretary Martin Diño Dies at 66

Former Interior Undersecretary Martin Diño passed away at the age of 66 on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 after his bhattle against stage 4 cancer. Diño’s daughter, Liza Diño-Seguerra, confirmed the heartbreaking news through her social media account.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Martin Diño. He fought bravely until the end, but God has called him home. We are grateful for the love and support that you have shown him and our family throughout this difficult time. He will always be in our hearts and memories,” she wrote on Facebook.

Diño served as the undersecretary for barangay affairs of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) from 2016 to 2018. He was also the former chairman of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) and the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA).

He was known for his staunch support for President Rodrigo Duterte, whom he initially filed a certificate of candidacy for in the 2016 presidential elections before withdrawing and endorsing Duterte as his substitute.

He was also vocal about his advocacy for federalism, anti-corruption, and anti-drug campaigns. He was instrumental in launching the Barangay Drug Clearing Program, which aimed to eradicate illegal drugs in all barangays nationwide.

He was also involved in several controversies, such as his feud with former SBMA chairman Roberto Garcia, his proposal to abolish all barangay officials and appoint officers-in-charge, and his alleged involvement in the “Davao Group” that facilitated smuggling at the Bureau of Customs.

Diño was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2020 and underwent chemotherapy and radiation therapy. He also contracted COVID-19 in March 2021 but recovered after a month of hospitalization.

He is survived by his wife Zeny and their four children: Liza, Martin Jr., Mark Anthony, and Maria Zenaida.

His family has yet to announce the details of his wake and funeral.
