Gilas Pilipinas Avenges Loss to Senegal, Clinches 2nd Win in China Tournament

Gilas Pilipinas showed its resilience and firepower as it overcame a six-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Senegal, 75-63, in the Heyuan WUS International Basketball Tournament on Sunday night, August 6, in Guandong, China.

The Philippine national team, which lost to the same Senegalese squad by eight points last Thursday, unleashed an 18-3 run in the final period to turn the tables and secure its second win in three games.

Rayray Parks sparked the rally with seven points, while AJ Edu and Kiefer Ravena nailed consecutive three-pointers to give Gilas a comfortable 65-56 lead with less than four minutes left.

CJ Perez led the balanced scoring attack for Gilas with 14 points, while Edu added 13 points and seven rebounds. Dwight Ramos chipped in 12 points, while June Mar Fajardo had 11 points and eight boards.

Parks finished with eight points, four rebounds, and three assists for the Nationals, who will face Iran in their next game.

Senegal was paced by Boissy with 16 points, while Youssoupha had nine points and nine rebounds. Brancou added eight points for the African team, which fell to 1-2 in the tournament.

Gilas Pilipinas is using the China tournament as part of its preparation for the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers in August and the FIBA Asia Cup in September.
