NCR Dominates Palarong Pambansa 2023

The 63rd edition of the Palarong Pambansa, the annual basic education sporting event in the Philippines, came to a close yesterday, August 5, 2023 at the Marikina Sports Center.

Vice President and Secretary of Education Sara Z. Duterte led the closing ceremony and congratulated the young athletes for their outstanding performance.

“I am pleased to join you today as we close the Palarong Pambansa 2023 with jubilation and pride in what our young athletes have achieved this week,” she said in her message.

She also thanked the local government of Marikina City for the smooth conduct of the 2023 Games and the participants for their active participation.

The National Capital Region (NCR) retained the Overall Championship title for the 16th consecutive year, bringing home 85 gold, 74 silver and 55 bronze medals. Western Visayas followed with 60 gold, 45 silver and 44 bronze medals, while CALABARZON placed third with 52 gold, 52 silver and 57 bronze medals.

The Palarong Pambansa is a showcase of various sports disciplines such as athletics, swimming, basketball, volleyball, badminton, chess, table tennis, taekwondo, gymnastics, archery, and many more.

The annual sports event aims to promote physical education and sports as an integral part of the basic education curriculum and to foster sportsmanship and camaraderie among Filipino youth.

Assistant Secretary for Operations and Palarong Pambansa Secretary-General Francis Cesar Bringas announced that Cebu City will host the 2024 Palarong Pambansa and Ilocos Norte will host the 2025 edition.

He expressed his confidence that the next hosts will continue the legacy of excellence and innovation in organizing the Palarong Pambansa.
